History of the place
According to the historical sources, the town was founded in 1826 by the Lipov Russians from the Don and Dnieper Lands. They left their homeland, as did all the other Lipo-Polish settlers who arrived in Romania from the same areas, following the application of new canonical rules by the Russian Orthodox Church and the Europeanization measures imposed by Tsar Peter the Great.
The area that provided them with accommodation has been inhabited since ancient times (numerous archaeological sites have been identified around the village). The oldest traces of settlement date back to the first Iron Age (8th century BC) and belong to the Babadag culture, which was succeeded by Greek settlers, who founded – according to ancient documentary information (Hekataios of Miletus) – the first Greek colony on Romanian territory: ORGAME (7th century BC).
