Located on the Dolosman Cape, Argamum Fortress is considered the first Greek settlement in Romania, dating back to the 7th century BC. Its ruins offer a glimpse into the ancient history of the region.

Greek settlers from Miletus, the most important city-state in Greece at that time, arrived in the area, most probably the first to establish a colony in the whole Black Sea basin and built the city of Orgame. The name of the town appears in the work “Periegesis” by the first geographer of Western history, Hecateus of Miletus.

There are very few sources on the Argamum-Orgame Fortress. Archaeological research is also not very advanced; the site, which covers almost 100 hectares, is only about 15% excavated, so more historical evidence may turn up at any time.

The fortress of Orgame-Argamum has known its periods of glory, but not very many. The settlement was inhabited almost continuously for 1300 years, but it was not a very important settlement like Histria, which was a bishopric and had public baths.
