The Geamia Gazi Ali Pasha in Babadag, built in the 17th century, is one of the oldest Muslim places of worship in Romania, reflecting the Ottoman influences in Dobrogea.
From Jurilovca to Babadag it’s 25 kilometers, which can be covered in about 24 minutes.
The place of worship has a typical Ottoman style with a minaret built of stone and brick, 21 meters high. Over the centuries, the place of worship has been important for Babadag and the surrounding villages.
There are two opinions as to the year of foundation of the place of worship. The most widely known is that the mosque was built in 1610. The information is also based on Ottoman documents published in 1932 in a magazine that appeared in Bazargic, Romania.
Archaeological excavations carried out in the early 1990s revealed that a caravanserai, an inn, may have existed near the mosque, the proceeds of which were donated to maintain these settlements built by order of Ali Gazi Pasha.
